Volunteerism and Service in France, Chile and the United States
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 5 page paper comparing volunteerism in France, Chile and the United States. Volunteerism and community service are not international trends and are unheard of in many countries. In the United States at least 49% of the population has claimed that they have volunteered at least once in a community based organization or event. Nationally however, volunteers within the United States tend to concentrate their volunteer efforts on local levels as do local corporations. Volunteers in France and other European countries however concentrate more on international issues and social responsibility than on local concerns. In other countries, such as Chile, volunteerism is almost unheard of and not an historical or cultural aspect of the national government’s agenda. As the difference in the wealth and poorer classes in Chile widens, volunteers have only recently emerged to try and promote support for people within the communities to have the basics of life and have had to rely heavily upon international volunteer efforts and support.

“Illiberal” Democracy -- Authoritarianism in Disguise
[ send me this essay ]
This 10
page report discusses the idea of “illiberal” democracy and how
in nations throughout the world, democratic elections are held
and then pointed to as examples of the democratization of the
country. Such systems are those which claim to be democracies but
are actually a hybrid in which political liberties exist but
civil liberties are limited. The rule of the people is determined
by what those ruling the people want them to want. Peru serves as
an excellent example of that process and is discussed in the
paper. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Imperialism
[ send me this essay ]
This 12 page report discusses the invasion of the
European world to the “new” world that often took place under the
guise of promoting Christianity and saving native people. “The
Mission” captures the hopelessness and ultimate destruction that
took place because of such domination. As the movie unfolds in
truly remarkable cinemagraphic beauty (it won the Oscar for
cinematography), it becomes clear that it is not the Indians who
are in need of salvation. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
