For the large part, clients’ information is only disclosed upon written authorization from the client. Confidentiality may not be guaranteed however in some situations which include times when the client may be a serious threat to him or herself or others; when there is reasonable suspicion of child abuse or abuse of the elderly or infirm; when a court order is issued; or when the information is used in defense to a formal complaint to the counselor among other instances.
